HISTORY

In 1968, a group of active parishioners decided to get together for a parish social evening and held the first parish dance in St. Joseph's Hall with Fr. Martin in attendance.

On May 1, 1969, the club sponsored Fr. Henye night, a dance held at the Kelowna Little Theater on Bertram Street.  After this dance, a formal committee of six couples was formed, with Ron and Iris Fournier in charge.  From there, parish dances were held in the Centennial Hall of Kelowna Memorial Arena.  In May and June of that year, parish picnics were held at Sutherland Park under the sponsorship of the social club (now called Parish Events).

Between 1969 and 1979, we continued to sponsor dances for Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day (the proceeds of which always went to Peace and Development), Mother's Day and New Year's Eve.  Members took altar boys swimming in Vernon, and a picnic was arranged for them at the rectory.  Mike Curran supplied the barbeque for these occasions.

Members of the club were in charge of getting parishioners to help around the church: mowing lawns, cleaning the church at Christmas and Easter, repairing the old rectory.

After the parish hall was built, we sponsored regular pancake breakfast after Sunday morning masses so that parishioners and visitors from other parishes could share a meal and each other's company.  We got many parishioners to help with setting up, cooking, serving and cleaning.

At the end of each session in June or July, there was a barbeque for the executives and their wives.

Jim White took over as chairman in 1979, until the club disbanded in 1981.

The goal of this club was to promote social unity in the parish.  Our objective was to create an atmosphere of community enjoyment and a spirit of oneness.  During the years of the club's existence many parishioners had an opportunity to meet and get to know one another.

PARISH PICNIC - 2001

PARISH PICNIC NEWS: We’re getting geared up for this FUN FAMILY EVENT to be held Sunday, June 10th at 2 p.m. at the Fr. Pandosy Mission! Families whose last names begin with A-L are asked to bring salads and names from M-Z are asked to bring desserts! We’ll be having a coloring contest for the children and you can pick up your picture to color after all masses this weekend! We still need helpers for the BBQ and some people with trucks to help move equipment from the parish to the picnic grounds. We also need someone willing to purchase the candy for the candy toss. Don’t forget to bring your plates, cutlery and lawn chairs and it would also be a good idea to label all the containers you bring food in, so you don’t lose them! Questions? Call Joe at 860-6870. See you there!

A FUN DAY:

Cool, windy & drizzly weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of 135 parishioners who attended our annual parish picnic. Joe & Linda Berger, convenors, and their crew kept the activities going for the young and young at heart. The fine cooks of our parish provided a large array of salads and desserts; and the experts at the barbeques whipped up delicious burgers, hotdogs and all the fixings. It was a fun time with races, watermelon relays, balloon toss, blindfold jello feeds and                                         tug-o-wars.

And the winners were:

Candy guessing contest – Marilyn Brown
Coloring contest – Michelle Dreher, Chris Janiewicz, Josh & Taylor Stewart
Tug –O-War  - The muscular M to Z team
Gate Prize – Bea Prichard

There was a tray, a bowl and some cutlery left at the site and you can pick them up from the hall kitchen.

The Parish Events Committee would like to thank everyone who helped, and those who came out to make the day so special. This is our last event till fall. Remember, we are always looking for people with new ideas and enthusiasm to help on our committee. If you are interested, call Lucille @ 763-5755 or Jo @ 762-3990.
