Bishop
Giuseppe Sarto Giuseppe Sarto wrote the Pope that he had been mistaken in appointing
someone like himself as Bishop. But,
his pleas fell on deaf ears and he was consecrated on November 16th,
1884. While he was travelling by
train with a friend, they overheard two men discussing the latest appointment.
“I hear he is not too intelligent,” one man said.
“And not terribly gifted either,” added the second.
On hearing these remarks, Giuseppe joined in the conversation adding
his own disparaging remarks in regards to his person.
When later the two men asked his friend who the delightful young priest
had been, his friend simply told them; “That is Monsignor Sarto, the new
Bishop of Mantua.”
