HOW TO GET INTO HEAVEN
A teacher was testing the
children in her Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of
getting to heaven. She asked them, "If I
sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the
church, would that get me into Heaven?" "NO!" the
children answered. "If I cleaned the
church every day, mowed the yard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would
that get me into Heaven?" Again, the answer was,
"NO!" Now she was smiling. Hey,
they're getting it, she thought! "Well, then, if I was kind to animals
and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me
into Heaven?" she asked. Again, they all answered,
"NO!" She was just bursting with
pride for them. "Well," she continued, "then how can I get into
Heaven?" A five-year-old boy
shouted out, "YOU GOTTA BE DEAD." PASTORAL

THANK YOU FROM CHILE This letter
came with the receipt for our donation to their relief efforts Very
dear Sisters and Friends I have not yet been able to fully comprehend this
enormous catastrophe and what it means for half of our country. Everything has
to begin again. For the children, school should have begun two
months ago but many schools are destroyed.
Here in Arauco we still do not have running water. The whole water
works had to be redone. We work day and night and not only here. Al this time we are visiting the families, and this,
for us, is a way of getting to know a lot of the people. Our mayor said this
act of God made us return to our former way of living where we greet one
another, ask news about each other and are not only interested in the other
but also in helping one another. The fact that it is not raining is a blessing for
those who are living in tents, and there are many of them. Presently we are
building temporary roofs before winter sets in and everyone is asked to help.
There are the young and the old as well as professionals coming from the north
and the south to help. In Chile, the number of people without roofs over their
head is enormous. I can tell you that I am awed by the reaction of the
people: we never stop thanking God for the fact that we are still alive with
our families and those we love. We can always replace material things but not
a life. This has really served to help us realize what is essential. For me,
this is a gilt of God. Almost every day we experience aftershocks and some
are quite strong: two days ago we awoke to a quake of 6.2 followed by another
of 5. Today at Mass there was another aftershock and again tonight and this
will continue for at least 6 months. We get somewhat used to them but when
they are stronger than 5 we get scared, for we do not know how it will end.
The underground noises are very loud. In spite of all, life seems normal. The
psychologists have a lot of work right now, especially with the children. Sr. Maria Luz
