OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

Today is Share Lent Sunday.  Throughout Canada, the traditional Share Lent Appeal will be conducted in favour of the poor of the world.  Monies donated to Development and Peace fund projects such as those in favour of the victims of the disastrous earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.  These monies are also necessary to continue hundreds of other projects throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America  to better the lives of our poor brothers and sisters.

The response of the Diocese of Nelson to assist the earthquake victims in Haiti was remarkable, exceeding one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars.   Because of the proximity to Share Lent Sunday, a special collection was not conducted for the victims in Chile.  I am sure that the poor of the world can continue to rely on the generosity of our people in the 2010 Share Lent Appeal.

Fraternally in Christ,

John Corriveau, OFMCap., Bishop of Nelson

SHORT TEACHING

In C. S. Lewis’ Screwtape Letters, Screwtape, a senior devil, describes the most common road to hell as “the gradual one, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts.”  It is not meant to raise any alarm bells.

The Christian path may well be the exact opposite.  At times it involves steep sections, gravel underfoot, sudden turnings and many signposts both as warnings and as encouragement.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of these signposts.  It is like a stop sign.  We are asked to stop, look back, reflect on where we have been and how we have witnessed to Christ’s Call.  We celebrate what is good and confess that which needs changing.  As a result, we can continue with new resolve and new direction.  Conversion often takes place one stop sign at a time.
Please check the bulletin for the many opportunities for Reconciliation throughout the region.
