The Legion of Mary is a world-wide organization of men and women whose purpose is to aid pastors in performing spiritual works in the parish. We place ourselves under the banner of Mary so that with her help we may develop greater holiness in our own lives s well as spread a deeper devotion to her among others. In St. Pius X Parish our Praesidium had its beginning in January 1974 under the direction of Fr. Maat, then assistant pastor. We adopted "Mary, Mother of the Church" as our official name. The first officers were:
Active members included Srs. Helen MacAulay, Joanna Wikenheiser, Kathleen Gilland, Wilma and Eva Zachir, and Bros. Bernard Gardner, John Lotochinski, and Loius Martin. That year we recruited 16 auxiliary members. Auxiliary members are those who give prayer support to the active members by daily recital of the rosary and prayers of the Legion, all for the intentions of our Blessed Lady. As active members, we have weekly meetings where we report on our spiritual work including promotion of the rosary, visiting fallen-away Catholics, spending time with the sick and shut-ins under the direction of the spiritual director. Do you like to visit people who are sick or shut-in? Do you offer at least 2 hours of service to the community per week? Do you have a special devotion to Mary, Mother of God? If so, you're already living out the ministry necessary to become a member of the Legion of Mary. Meetings are held Tuesdays mornings in the Fr. Martin Room to offer prayer and support to legion members.
