Tidbits from the Life of St. Pius Xth

Bishop Giuseppe Sarto

Even as Bishop, he paid special attention to instructing the children.  During his pastoral visits, he often took time to teach the First Communicants.  Parents who were slow to perform their Christian duty were scolded.  He could not tolerate lax attitudes when it came to raising children in the faith.  Giuseppe’s days were quite strenuous.  Each day began at 5:00am with Mass in his chapel, followed by prayer and the hearing of confessions at the Cathedral.  Breakfast was followed by a busy day’s work, interrupted by numerous unannounced visits.  In the evening, he strolled through the streets of Mantua to speak with the people and by 9:00pm he would pray the rosary and continue his work and study until midnight.
