FOOD
BANK MONTH July is a traditionally
low point at the Kelowna Food Bank when it comes to food donations.
St. Pius X Parish is planning to help.
In addition to donating $2,000 for perishable items such as milk and
eggs, we also hope to collect non-perishable items each Sunday as you come to
Mass. All July is Food Bank
month, please bring your contributions to Church or you can drop them off at
the Kelowna Community Food Bank at 1265 Ellis Street.
Financial donations are also welcome between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm at the
Food Bank. Due to their non-profit status, they can buy three times more
food for a dollar than we can. EMPLOYMENT

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS, NOT
A guy was arrested when he
was apprehended after fleeing from a routine traffic stop. It turns out that
he was wanted for bank robbery. When he complained of
stomach pain and lost consciousness, he was admitted to a hospital. He must
have felt better because he walked out of the hospital and went into a bar.
But he forgot to get dressed first. The bar owner called the police when he
arrived in a hospital gown with the intravenous needle still in his arm. UPCOMING

SPECIAL THANK YOU A special thank you to our
Saturday clean-up crew who cleaned the Church after the dry walling (and
sanding) was done. Thank you for
your generous and cheerful help. Special thanks also goes
out to our volunteer painters. Thank
you for the time you set aside over the period or three days to make the
painting a success. Special recognition goes
out to Denis Frie, senior structural engineer at Sargent & Associates
Engineering Ltd for generously contributing all of his time to the project. To the Pastors and Faithful of the Diocese of Nelson Dear sisters and brothers, May the Lord give you
peace! At 10:30 am on Wednesday,
August 11th there will be a ground-breaking ceremony at 3645
Benvoulin Road adjacent to St. Charles Garnier Church in Kelowna.
This ceremony will mark the beginning of construction of our new Chancery
Office and Pastoral Centre. Everyone
is cordially invited to attend. In
anticipation of the new offices and pastoral centre, a Bishop’s Residence was
established on the same property. This
pre-existing residence was prepared at minimal cost and was occupied toward the
end of 2009. The new Chancery Office
and Pastoral Centre will include the following: Bishop’s Office, Office of the
Executive Secretary, Chancellors’ Office, Finance Office, Office of the
Pilgrimage of Faith, Office of the
Marriage Tribunal, Office of Religious Education, the Archives of the Diocese
and a Diocesan Board Room. The new
centre will also house the offices of the Catholic Independence Schools of
Nelson Diocese (CISND). The centre
will include two meeting rooms
which will be used by the St. Charles Garnier Parish.
The construction costs for these two meeting rooms will be borne by St.
Charles Garnier Parish. The budget for this
project (excluding Bishop’s Residence and Chancery Office Furnishings) is set
at one million, two hundred thousand dollars ($1,200,000.00). These
costs will be divided as follows: St. Charles Garnier Parish (cost of meeting rooms):
$ 158,000.00 Diocese of Nelson:
1,042,000.00 Total Budget:
$1,200,000.00 The division of costs
between the Diocese and St. Charles Garnier Parish is based on the percentage of
floor space being created for each, namely 86.8% of the floor space will be
occupied by the Diocese, 13.2% by St. Charles Garnier Parish. Adding the cost of the
Bishop’s Residence (approximately $60,000.00) and the cost of furnishing the
new Chancery Office and Pastoral Centre (approximately $100,000.00), it is
projected that this entire project can be completed at a total cost to the
Diocese of one million, two hundred
thousand dollars. This cost will
provide both the Diocesan Office and Bishop’s Residence. As indicated during the
town hall meetings conducted in each parish, we have decided to finance the new
Chancery Office and Pastoral Centre without resorting to a new diocesan-wide
appeal. We do not wish to undermine
the annual Pilgrimage of Faith Appeal which finances so many essential Diocesan
and Community services. More
important, we do not wish to undermine the financial health of our parishes,
many of which are small and, as such, always challenged financially.
Therefore, we have agreed upon a three-pronged financial plan: Four hundred thousand
dollars ($400,000.00) will be withdrawn from our Diocesan reserves. The remaining eight
hundred thousand dollars ($800,000.00) will be borrowed from the consolidated
parish fund of the Diocese and repaid over the next several years by a special
3% levy to be added to the “cathedraticum” or Diocesan tax which is paid by
each parish to support the needs of the Diocese. For this reason, we ask you to consider increasing your
normal Sunday offerings by three or four percent to cover this added burden to
the finances of your parish family. The new Chancery Office
and Pastoral Centre will have a Donors’ Wall.
Beyond the contributions listed above, you may wish to make a donation in
honour or in memory of a loved one. For
those who wish, these gifts will be memorialized on the Donor’s Wall.
There will be no formal fundraising effort.
You may make your gift by placing it in one of the envelopes which will
be available in all of our parishes. These
envelopes may be dropped in the Sunday collection baskets in your parish or sent
directly to the Diocesan Office in Nelson.
Income tax receipts will be issued by the Diocese.
A much-loved and holy
Capuchin brother from Detroit, Fr. Solanus Casey, was accustomed to tell people:
“Thank God ahead of time!” I
thank our God and Father and I thank you in advance for your generous response
to this important new initiative in the service of our Diocesan Church. Fraternally in Christ,
John Corriveau, OFMCap. Bishop of Nelson
