PEOPLE? One
day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country
with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live. They spent a
couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor
family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, 'How was
the trip?' 'It
was great, Dad.' 'Did
you see how poor people live?' the father asked. ‘Oh
yeah,' said the son. 'So,
tell me, what did you learn from the trip?' asked the father. The
son answered: 'I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool
that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no
end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a
small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but
they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have
friends to protect them.' The boy's father was speechless. Then
his son added, 'Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.' Isn't
perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all
gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't
have. Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends! SOCIAL JUSTICE CURRENT

We want to thank the Good Samaritan Society for providing this
opportunity for us to develop our skills is this very important ministry.
The celebration of the Mass dates back to the
time of the early Christians who gathered regularly to worship.
The elements of their rituals have been a consistent framework upon
which the celebration of the Mass has been expanded over the centuries.
In 1963 the leaders as the Second Vatican Council of the church
initiated changes in how we celebrate the Mass; these changes mandated “the
full and active participation” of everyone in our worship.
The time is right for us to make an opportunity to learn more about and
reflect on the Mass as we celebrate it today.
Over the next liturgical year, this column in
the bulletin will be devoted to instruction and reflection on the liturgy of
the Mass and its various components. You
are encouraged to consider how you take seriously your responsibility to
participate fully in the community celebration of the Mass each week, as we
consider such questions as: What is the Mass?
How did it get started? What
do all the different parts mean? Why
do we read from the Bible at Mass?
What are all the prayers that the priest says?
Why do we read the particular portions of Scripture that are used in
the Sunday Lectionary? What is a
Lectionary? What is the creed?
Is the homily the same as the sermon?
Do different colors of the vestments the priest wears mean something?
What is a liturgical year? Why
do we sit and stand and kneel? What
is a Eucharistic prayer? Is the
Mass mentioned in the Bible anywhere? How
has the celebration of the Mass developed over time?
What is the spiritual meaning of our celebration?
How does the Mass unite us to Christ and to one another?
How does the Mass participate in the Pascal Mystery (the passion, death
and resurrection of the Lord?) What
are the reasons for going to Mass? What
is the purpose and value of the sign of peace?
Why do we sometimes call it the Mass, but others times call it
Eucharist and still other times call it Liturgy? The Mass is the work of God.
God calls us together. God
is at the center because God gives us Christ as God’s own gift.
The original meaning of Liturgy, from the
Greek word liturgia, was “work for the people.”
The Mass is the work of God, work for the people.
It is God’s gift to us. The
Mass is a free gift from God, but like all gifts it does require our response.
Our only true and worthy response to a gift from God is gratitude,
thanksgiving. The Greek word for
thanksgiving is Eucharist. Every
time we gather to celebrate the Eucharist we are coming together to give
thanks to God for the great gift of Christ.
The purpose of the Mass is to enable us to become grateful people,
Eucharistic people. The early Christians fell into some poor
habits when they gathered for Eucharist. When
the Christians in Corinth began to abuse the Eucharist with divisions among
the community, selfish eating and drinking, St. Paul admonished them and
called them back to truth (1 Cor. 12:17ff).
How do I come to celebrate Eucharist?
Am I becoming a more grateful, more thankful person?
Do I come to Mass full of gratitude for what God has done for us in
Christ? The only really worthy
motivation of the Christian for celebrating the Mass is thanksgiving, not
fear, not guilt. Do I come with a
heart of love and gratitude? Or do
I come out of fear that I will be punished or forsaken if I do not attend?
Do I come to feel good and avoid feelings of guilt?
Or do I come overwhelmed by the goodness of God?
How do I come? The basic dynamic of Christian prayer is
gift—response: God gives; we are
the ones who respond to the gift. Let
us live as eucharistic, grateful receivers of God’s gifts.
