drawing God.” “But
no one knows what God looks like, Alice.” Without
missing a beat, Alice replied, “They will when I’m finished.” LOVE

PANDOSY MISSION AND MUSEUM
If you are interested in finding out more
please contact Alice Lundy at 250-763-3458. CURSILLO There are four options for dismissal at Mass
in the new translation. Two of which are: ·
“Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord.” ·
“Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” These are challenging statements. These are
counter culture statements. How can we as Christians announce the Gospel of
the Lord? The easiest way is to live the Gospel where we live, work and play;
to be like Jesus in our environment, our culture. This is possible! The
Cursillos in Christianity can show how. The Diocese of Nelson Cursillo
Movement is holding Cursillo weekends in March 2012. The dates are: ·
Women’s: Mar
8 - 11 ·
Men's:
Mar 15 - 18 For info contact Pete 250-764-7615 or Gail
250-764-7007. FRIENDS

Where does the Liturgy of the Mass as we
celebrate it today come from? As
we have learned already, the Mass as celebrated by the early Christians was a
private event in the home of a family, and was very simple; but, once the Mass
became public, the ceremonies around it were enhanced, and a framework or
structure began to develop. The structure of the Mass is based on at least
five official “books” of the Roman Catholic Church. Two of these books are
contained in one – the Roman Missal. The book of prayers that the priest
uses is called the Sacramentary—one part of the Roman Missal.
This is a very important book when trying to understand the Liturgy of
the Eucharist or the Mass. The
second part of the Roman Missal is also very important.
It is called the Lectionary. This
is the collection of scriptural or Bible readings that cover the entire cycle
of the liturgical year—both for Sundays and weekdays. The third book is called the General
Instruction on the Roman Missal—sometimes referred to as the GIRM.
The GIRM has gone through four revisions (editions) since Vatican II,
the latest being published in 2002. This
General Instruction is a collection of official instructions on the how and
why of how we celebrate the liturgy. The General Introduction to the Lectionary is
the fourth document and it gives the rationale of why the church chooses
certain readings to be used at particular times of the year, and for certain
feasts and for Sundays. The fifth of our documents that determines how
we celebrate liturgy is the Calendar of the Catholic Church.
The calendar sets in place the series of Sundays and feast days, based
upon when Easter is celebrated. The
Calendar is divided primarily into Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter; the
remainder of the year we call Ordinary—or “ordinal”—as we simply count
off the remaining weeks of the year.
The calendar also includes the great saints’ days that we celebrate,
the feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as well as special feasts of our Lord,
such as the Body and Blood of the Lord, the Transfiguration of the Lord and
the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Since the second century the Mass, or
Eucharistic Liturgy, has had a structure that is common to all Catholics
throughout the world. There are
two major parts that make up our act of worship:
the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Within each part there are various actions, readings and prayers.
Some of these are the same from Mass to Mass while others change each
day. In the Liturgy of the Word, the community
gathers and prepares to celebrate. The
ministers—the presider, deacon, lectors, altar servers, musicians, those who
present the offertory gifts, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and
other ministers—along with the worshiping community begin with the
Introductory Rites. These include
the Penitential Rite, the Gloria when it is sung, and the Opening Prayer. Immediately after the Opening Prayer the
congregation sits to listen to the Scriptures proclaimed.
The readings that are heard have been chosen to help us reflect on the
particular liturgical season being celebrated.
If the Mass is during Ordinary Time, the Gospel readings tell us about
the public life of Christ. The
other two readings support the gospel or perhaps offer a related idea.
The readings are followed by a homily that helps the community to
reflect on the meaning of the readings and apply them to our own lives.
This part of the Mass concludes with the Profession of Faith in the
recitation of the Creed, followed by the intercessory prayers. The second part of the Mass is the Liturgy of
the Eucharist. The gifts of bread
and wine, along with the people’s monetary gifts (some of which are used for
the poor and needy) are brought forward. Then
the priest prays the Eucharistic Prayer on behalf of the whole assembly.
At the conclusion of this lengthy prayer, the people’s “Amen”
confirms all that has been prayed. After
the Lord’s Prayer, the Lamb of God is sung or said while the priest is
breaking the Body of Christ. Then,
the Body and Blood of Christ is received by the faithful, in Holy Communion. Following the closing prayer, the priest
blesses the people and dismisses the assembly.
The community is now sent to live the sacrament that has just been
celebrated. Sr.
