UPDATE ON FR. BART’S MOM

Her cancer is temporarily under control.  She is still having trouble swallowing (permanent radiation damage) and has difficulty and pain breathing at times (chronic condition: long-term exposure to second hand smoke).  She is doing well and is active in ministry.

HOLY HOUR FOR PRIESTS - LOCAL PILGRIMAGE

Parishes from West Kelowna to Winfield are hosting a series of Holy Hours for Priests.  Let us show our support for our priests by attending as many as possible, turning our prayers into a local pilgrimage.  The next Holy Hour will be Fri, Feb 5th, at St. Pius X Church in Kelowna, 7:00-8:00 pm.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR

The next children’s Mass will be Feb 14th at 11:00 am.  If you know of children who would like to join, we practice every Tuesday in the church from 7:00 ‑ 7:30 pm (after Catechism).  All children are welcome.

HOLY COMMUNION FOR CELIACS

Those suffering from Celiac react negatively to gluten in wheat.  Since all communion hosts contain wheat, those suffering from Celiac are strongly encouraged to receive from the cup.  Please let the priest know prior to Mass and a special Communion cup will be blessed for this purpose and placed on the corner of the altar.  Due to the possibility of cross-contamination, no one receiving the Sacred Host should receive from this cup.

PERFUMES & COLOGNES

We would ask that the wearing of perfumes and colognes be avoided as some parishioners have allergies to scents.

BEPI’S BISTRO

Join us in the Fr Martin room after the 9am and 11am masses for socializing and goodies.

THE SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

Please join us at St. Pius X on Mon Jan 18th & 25th as we view and discuss the DVD presentations given by Fr. James Mallon of the Archdiocese of Halifax on the sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.  We will begin at 6:00 pm with a scrumptious supper (by donation) followed by the DVD presentation at 7:00 pm.  Please register for supper by Jan 15th by calling Janet at 250‑860‑8807.  Come and find out what the top ten reasons (serious and comical) are for going to confession.

DINNER EVENT

The Knights of Columbus are hosting a supper on Jan 16th in the parish hall.  The evening will commence with mass at 5:00 pm and supper will be served at 6:45 pm.  Past and present students of Immaculata will be providing some entertainment following supper.  Tickets are $20 each and will be on sale at the breakfast this weekend.  Please see or call Tony Bestick for your tickets.  All profits from the supper are going towards supporting the Mexico Mission group from Immaculata.

CWL MEETING

The January meeting for CWL will be Tuesday, Jan 11th at 9:30 am after morning Mass.  Note the change to a daytime meeting.  National Office has issued permanent membership cards which will be available for pick up at the meeting.  Members of The Catholic Women’s League of Canada are dedicated to the preservation of Christian family life and the rights of the unborn, as well as many other social issues.  Come and join us on Tuesday morning to find out more about this vibrant organization.

THE VILLAGE OF MYSTICAL ROSE

Join us in prayer (rosary) after mass on Friday mornings at St Pius X.  Any questions or inquires please call Sylvia Jacobsen at (250) 869‑0450

FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN

The BC Ministry of Education is phasing in Full Day Kindergarten over the next two years.  Please note there will be no ½ day option.  Kindergarten 2010-2011 registration will begin on Jan 11.  Please contact the school (250) 763‑3371 after Jan 10th to arrange to pick up an application.  If email is more convenient, please request a Kindergarten application at school@stjosephkelowna.ca.

ST. PIUS X K OF C BREAKFAST

St. Pius X Knights invite all to attend their Breakfast on after both Sunday masses this weekend.

MASS AT SANDALWOOD

Mass at 10:00 am Jan 14th

  UNTIMELY ANSWERED PRAYER

During the priest's prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from one of the back pews.  Tommy's mother was horrified.  She pinched him into silence and, after church, asked, 'Tommy, whatever made you do such a thing?'  Tommy answered soberly, 'I asked God to teach me to whistle, and He did!'

CONFIRMATION MEETING

There is a special Confirmation meeting on Thursday Jan 14th at 7:00 pm for parents and candidates.  Please bring a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate if they were not baptised at St. Pius X parish.

PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

Please come and pray for Christian Unity on Sun Jan 24th at 1:30 pm at the Christian Science Church on the corner of Bernard and Bertram.

MASS AT BIG WHITE

Mass will be held each Sunday concluding on Mar 21st.  All Masses will be at 3:30 pm in the Schumann House, at the top of the gondola.

SUNDAY HOLY HOUR

We will continue our Sunday evening holy hours beginning with evening prayer at 7:00 pm.  As we begin a month-long Diocesan vocation awareness program, let us pray for a renewed spirit of discernment in our parish and diocese.

CALLED BY NAME

To mark “The Year of the Priest” in our Diocese, we would like to emphasize God’s Call to the priesthood, diaconate and religious life in a special way. “Called by Name” is a program that identifies potential vocations to the religious life, diaconate and priesthood. Our parish will be involved in this program over the next month. Details will be forthcoming next Sunday. In the meantime, please pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS TO SAY AT HOME

God of all creation, In baptism you called each of us by name to be your children.  We give you thanks and praise for this gift.
May the Good News of Jesus Christ, which inspired the first disciples to ‘Come and See’, continue to speak in our world today.
Bless the Diocese of Nelson with men and women who will answer your call to speak your Word as religious brothers and sisters, priests and deacons.  We make this prayer through Jesus, your Son and our Brother. Amen

Tidbits from the Life of St. Pius X

Pope Pius X

Pope Pius X did his best to distance himself from any healings that may have occurred.  “It is the power of the keys,” he sometimes was heard to say, referring to the power of his office.  One lady, who had more enthusiasm than tact, confronted him: “I hear that you are a santo and work miracles.”  To which the Pope replied laughingly; “You have made a mistake in one of your consonants.  I am not a santo only a Sarto.”  At another time his wit also shone forth when a man came looking for a Cardinal’s hat for one of his friends.  “I cannot give your friend a Cardinal’s hat.  I am not a hatter, only a tailor.”
