CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE The organizational meeting of the St. Pius X C.W.L. was held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Hall on March 11, 1962. There were approximately 60 women present. Fr. Martin conveyed the good wishes of Bishop Doyle and explained the importance of the nationwide organization in helping with church needs and charity work in the parish and community. Mrs. Fisher of Lumby, the C.W.L. organizer, stated that as a united group speaking with one voice, the C.W.L. helps to protect the dignity of women, to safeguard family life, and to restore all things in Christ. 1st C.W.L. Schaeffer, Mrs. Lydia Feiderer. These women worked very closely with the pastor, helping where needed in the parish. Members since then have continued in the work including: being Eucharistic ministers, lectors, commentators, members of parish council, and being catechists for children and adults. Some are involved in R.C.I.A., Baptism ministry, ministry to the sick and bereaved, still others are in music ministry. Some ladies visit shut-ins at home and in the hospital, some are hospital volunteers and hospital auxiliary members. We also serve lunch after funerals and other parish functions and we have a catering service for weddings and other functions. This latter is or chief source of revenue. Our members also play an active part in the parish bazaar. Donations are made to organizations requesting financial aid, and we also present a bursary to a deserving high school graduate each year. Our meetings begin with Mass for the intentions of our members and we frequently have interesting guest speakers. Reference: Helen Curran, Our History, 1986 C.W.L. Circles Since the early days of our parish there have been several circles in existence. A circle is a small group of women who meet in each other's homes to pray, socialize, do arts and crafts, and to take on responsibility for jobs that needed doing around the church and rectory. There have been 5 circles in our parish. Some of them still exist today.
Some of the work that was done by the groups includes: cleaning the church and rectory, arranging flowers, laundering the altar linen, bazaar, rummage sales, cleaning the pastor's vestments, and many other jobs and projects for the benefit of the parish. The C.W.L. is the largest national organization of Catholic in Canada. Its mission is the religious renewal of the people of God as envisioned by the documents of Vatican II. They plan, develop and coordinate programs for the individual and collective spiritual development, encouraging and supporting Christian values.
