"The supreme and eternal Priest, Christ
Jesus, since he wills to continue his witness and service What is this ministry of communion all about? The Minister of the Eucharist exercises that priestly role, especially during the celebration of the liturgy of the Eucharist. The Lay Minister is meant to assist the priest. It is with great reverence that this very special privilege is to be shared. A brief study of the history of this ministry reveals that the present role of the Minister of the Eucharist is the revival of a privilege that belonged to the laity up to the 8th century. At that time it was normal procedure for lay people to distribute the Eucharist at home, in case of necessity, and to the sick. With the advent of the Vatican II, many changes have taken place in the church. The revival of the role of the Eucharistic Minister has certainly had a great and profound impact on our worshipping communities. Since Vatican II we have taken many important steps which have changed the layman's role within the church. The term Eucharistic Minister began with a call to serve our community in a new and heartfelt way. It began with a willingness to be of greater service to others and quickly became a deep commitment, a real dedication. Bill and Anne Walton, Jack Takken, Bill Kane, Raymonde Gaudet and Doris Johnson were installed by Bishop Doyle as Eucharistic Ministers in the fall of 1979 Reference: Doris Johnson, Our History, 1986 If you have a deep devotion to the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, this ministry may be what God is calling you to. If your heart is leading you toward this ministry, please call the office.
