Many young men had their first experience as active participants in the church by being "Altar Boys." The parish has been very fortunate in always having a large number of young people who were willing to perform the various tasks necessary to assist the priests, whether at Mass, marriages, funerals or special occasions. The term altar boys was revised to a more appropriate title, Altar Servers, in 1981 when young women were allowed with a little persuasion from a few girls, to serve at Mass. Being an Altar Server is an excellent program for young men and women to become active participants in our Church. It is impossible to note all the servers during the history of our church, but we would like to thank them and their coordinators (Frances de Montreuil, Howard Jakubec, Darlene and Darcy O'Keefe, Tim Johnson and the priests) for the valuable service they have provided. The first alter servers were: Steven Fournier, Henry Gagnon, Ron Parker, Glen Parker, Wilfred Leblanc, Todd Turik, Grant Turik, Guy Turik, Doug Rambolt, Wayne Welsh, John McCormick, Craig Williston, Peter Loretto, John Vaccaro, Paul Gagnon, Bill DiPasquale, Tom Zubot. Reference: Howard Jakubec, Our History, 1986 Any parishioner starting from Grade 4 and up can be part of this ministry. Training is provided to help the pastor out at one of the Sunday Masses (choosing from Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. or Sunday morning either at 9:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.). This important ministry includes helping with the Eucharistic celebrations - including carrying the cross and candles, bringing offerings up and assisting the pastor in a variety of ways. There are also special functions to learn during seasons like Christmas and Lent where you will be working with incense and learning special rituals for the Holy Thursday and Good Friday services. If you'd like to be an altar server, please call the office.
